Sun Calculator

Found this site this morning and thought it might be helpful.
Sun Calculator

I can see using it to optimize your location within a campground for solar or for framing that perfect sunrise/sunset photograph.
  • My new Garmin RV 760 shows sun rise & sun set at what ever location your at. Have not looked to see how accurate it is but will on our next trip.

  • I just try to make sure that the front of the fiver is headed toward north.
That way,we get morning sun on the curb side and afternoon sun on the street side.
In most case there is not a lot of choice in the matter, due to the layout of the park or campground.
  • Given the limitations of that particular site, may I suggest that there are apps for your smartphone/iPad that allow you to calculate location/bearing and shadow angle/rise-set times for both sun and moon for any location or time-of-day/date you wish. I put one on my iPod Touch called LightTrac (available from the app store). I use it from time to time in satellite-view mode as I'm a photographer, but I can see it might be useful for campers wishing to insure they have the shade during the heat of the day or to locate the right angle to set a solar array.
  • It appears that it may be an orphaned app. The author hasn't commented since 2010. What a shame as it has potential.
On a related note I see that Google has removed a lot of functionality from their online maps. I used to me able to get distances (straight line) between two points and the coordinates of a point.
  • BrutusTheDog, thanks so much for posting! Before heading to new park, I try to estimate sun rises and sets (and maximizing shade under the awning!) based on the map's key for north. This takes it to the next step.

Now then, if I could just find an app to identify trees and plants (or birds!) by picture, much like facial recognition works, I'd have so many more names to describe what I see!
  • I agree it is a fun, but it needs some more information to be truly useful. Bearing and Azimuth bring two of them. Also, it would be helpful if it took into account local variances (i.e.; elevation and shadowing) caused by terrain.
