Tekonsha controller or brake issue?

Kinda at a loss here as what is going on. I have 2 trucks and both run the tekonsha voyager brake controller. If I tow with the 04 2500 hemi the brakes on the trailer work fine and can be dialed in to right amount of braking power that I like, However if I am using the 05 2500 CTD truck the controller will not dial in the brakes. The controller shows it is connected with the green dot and turned all the way up and you cannot feel the brakes at all. If I turn the left adjust all the way up I can hear a electrical noise at the brakes on the trailer. Can the unit be bad? Is there a way to initially set it up? The 05 CTD is a newer truck to us so not overly familiar with it. The trailer is a 2013 and new,
  • Try to determine what you know and don't know.

    Truck A:
    Works trailer brakes OK.

I'd conclude the trailer is ok if it works on any truck and truck A is ok.

    Truck B:
    Trailer still OK.

Truck B seems like the problem.
I'd check the voltage output on pin 2 blue wire of the connector at the bumper.
Adjust the controller to Max output and use the manual operator and max out the braking. You should read 12VDC at this point with a Volt meter.

I'd check each wire in the connector particularly the brake output pin 2 blue wire and pin 1 white wire ground. Both wires are used when the brakes are applied. Check the connector for damage or bent pins, loose wires, whiskers (so no shorting) and tighten all the terminal screws.

  • Do you have two controllers? Or are you moving the controller from one truck to the other? I have three tow vehicles and and two trailers. I use the same P3 in all three as I can only drive one at a time.
  • 2 separate controllers, 1 for each truck. I agree and think truck B and controller B is the issue. I will check outputs and plug next. Thanks
  • If you have two controllers I would just swap controllers and see where the problem goes.
  • There is a maximum angle of inclination for install for the controller. Could that be exceeded or is it a factory install?
  • The controller on Truck 2 could be bad after years of use. I just replaced a Tekonsha Envoy with a Prodigy P3 because the Envoy just quit working.
