Telescoping towbar

After all those years of towing with an inexpensive fixed arm adjustable width towbar, I finally got a telescoping arm unit.
For the pickup, I found a Roadmaster Stowmaster 5000, 6000 lb. capacity towbar on craigslist for what I thought was a good price.
I took it for the maiden voyage today.
While it is a little easier to hook up than a fixed arm unit, the old "Get Out And Look" system is still required. Maybe after I get used to it I can get closer the first time.
However, UNhooking is just as difficult as the old fixed arm rig! The release buttons aren't easy to work at all! Newer ones may be better, but this old Stowmaster is a little difficult!
Maybe I will take advantage of the easier hook up, and forget about trying to release it to unhook.
Other than that, the maiden voyage went just fine. The truck follows just fine, the rig accelerates adequately, and I think I am ready to tackle Marias Pass next week.

I was in the lane in front of the house, it is flat as a plate, and the rig was as straight as could be.

I gave it a good bath in silicone lube when I bought it. I'll spray it/soak it again and see if it helps.
  • the adjustable tow bars aren't magic - ya still gotta get close, but you don't have to be as precise to be "on the ball".

I lay the bar (collapsed) on the ground and then find some kinda marker (that i can see from the driver seat of the towed)....you can use a stick, pebble, rock or bit of trash to mark how close you need to get....it doesnt have to be precise...leave a little distant....because you'll be able to extend the tow bar to meet the dinghy.

if the arms and releases are LOCKED or binding - sit in the towed vehicle and crank the steering wheel from lock to lock - these will help to unbind the locks.
  • Congrats on moving up to a telescoping unit! I have the Sterling by Roadmaster. And , Yes, Silicon Lubricant Spray is your friend!!
  • A generous shot of Silicon Lubricant should get those arms loosened up! I will miss My Stowmaster 5000 as it went with the Toad when I sold it!
It was always easier and quicker to get hooked up than anyone with the "Other" Style ,left on the Motorhome design units that seem to be the rage !
Anyway Our New Toad will be using an Excalibar !
