Thought it was someone's generator but it was my water pump!

Woke up at 2 AM to a muted mechanical noise. In my sleepy state I thought, "How inconsiderate, that camper using their generator through the night, way past quiet hours." I turned on my fan to mask the noise and went back to sleep.

In the morning I discovered what the noise really was: My water tank was empty and the water pump was running all night! With no apparent ill effects I might add; it still works!

My battery however, was pretty low by morning and it needed a boost from my own generator (after quiet hours were over of course)!

  • Even at full hookup campsites I never hook up to water. I prefer to run off the fresh water tank instead. I like to hear the sound of the pump because it tells me I may have a leak if I hear it running with all faucets turned off. I always turn the pump off at night so there is no possibility of damage either to the pump or water damage due to a leak. Been doing this over 25 years and have never had any issues with damage due to water leakage from the plumbing.

I didn't know that. One guy told me that if I didn't get to the switch to shut it off asap when it hit the bottom of the tank it would burn up!!!

  • You are REAL lucky it didn't burn out! You'd think they could have put a shut off switch on those pumps.:R
  • We where heading home after 3 weeks on the road, and a mile or so from home, I noted a muted rumble. Odd. After getting home and finding the source, I thought the pump switch had given up because there was at least an inch of water over the draw nipple. So... I replaced it because I wanted a newer, better, quieter pump anyway. I tested the old, and it ran fine.
Apparently with the low tank and varying pressures against the draw nipple as the water sloshed back and forth in the tank, it decided to start up and not shut off. Perhaps there was a slow seep too, maybe a faucet didn't get completely shut off. Who knows.
We keep the tank a little fuller now.
  • Had that happen a little while ago. My aunt uses or trailer as a guest house when she visits. The pump was on and the tank was nearly empty from the last trip. Couple uses and it ran dry. My pump is on a isolating block and I have put cloth around the pipes so it runs very quiet. She did not realize it was running. I discovered it the next evening. Ran dry for 24 hours. These pumps are designed to run dry, and my aunt tested that theory! Seems to be fine :)

So......Where did the pumped water go?

It was really low before I went to bed. On the verge of running dry. A few drops leaking from the outside shower could have been the tipping point.
