Hi Jim,

Thanks for the clarification. I still prefer http://freecampsites.net/ which has places to stay that are from $12 down to free.

with rare exceptions we only camp on full hookup sites .... for us, free/cheap sites rarely work .... interesting link, its good to know of a source out there for folks to use

I'm the same as JEBar. We camp and use full-hookup sites (often times, 50amp service) and enjoy the amenities (with 2 kids- most of their parks work well for us).

We don't camp nearly often as others, but usually get a good 50 nights in per year. This past year, we went to Disney World and stayed at the Thousand Trails park there for 9 nights.

There are per some accounts maybe 450 different contracts. Ours is the Elite connections which allows us 3 weeks in and move immediately to another park with unlimited days per year for no extra charge. We currently pay $600.00 per year but I can freeze my dues when I hit 62. (in 5 years). Like I said this year we are going to be in for 187 nights so the nightly costs are $3.21.
As far as the OP worrying about being locked in for life for something they are not using, TT does not even offer lifetime contracts anymore.
If you do have a lifetime like ours, the courts have decided that you have a right to cancel them after a reasonable term. They considered the lifetime terms "enslavement". With mine, after the first three years we had a right to cancel in writing or of course resale it at anytime.
If you decide TT is right for you, which it was not for us until we we were preparing to retire and go fulltime, do not worry about being locked in for life, whether you are going to get your moneys worth is the only real question imho!

For me.. TT is a good deal.. For you.. Well, some folks swear by it, some at it, most swear.

Ask yourself some questions:

1. Do I like TT as a camping destination?
2. About how many nights a year will I use my membership?
3. If I divide my annual dues into the number of nights I'll use the membership what is the nightly cost?

If number one is answered "yes" and if the results of number two and three is acceptable to you, you've answered your question. If not, you'll probably be happier without the membership and its obligations.

Thousand Trails is now part of Equity LifeStyle Properties.

We received a Thousand Trails membership for no initial charge when we bought our RV.

When we were full timing, we used TT a lot, especially in the Pacific Northwest which is one of our favorite areas.

We've had to cut back to RVing only about 6 months a year for various reasons, but we winter in Arizona in an ELS park, and the discount for being a TT member more than pays for the annual TT dues.

It can be a complicated decision, and individual circumstances can vary widely.
