I prefer my RV. In the past 5 years I've boondocked for 230 nights per year and stayed in campgrounds about 25 nights.
Assuming $50 per night and 1000 nights, I've saved $50,000.00 during the five year period.
When I was part time, I would spend 30 to 50 nights per year in the RV, nearly all boondocking.
$50 per night x 150 nights = $7,500.00 over five years.
I eat out one day per week while camping.
My biggest expense for the RV is fuel. If I have time and traffic permits it I drive quite slowly. I'm not in a "rush" to get to where I am staying.
$260 of fuel takes me around 700 km, or 434 miles.
So, if I travel and stay for a time, the RV is cheaper. But on a road trip, with long distances, inexpensive motels are cheaper.
Starting on Sunday 2018 10 14 I'll be traveling 712 km and boondocking for ten nights. At least one of the places I'll be going to has no accommodations. I'll save the cost of my fuel easily on this trip.
