For us it depends on the time of year and circumstances. We recently had to visit family for two quick weekends 3 weeks apart due to a death in the family. Would have loved to taken the trailer but it would have been far more hassle than it was worth. So it was motels.
On one of our long trips with the trailer circumstances dictated an overnight drive with the idea that we might stop for a few hours sleep. There were no CGs nearby an area we thought we might want to stop at. Truckers sometimes stop and sleep in motel lots so I called a motel. They were more than happy to allow us to park and sleep in their lot. They even offered us use of the bathrooms. It doesn't hurt to ask.
