I often make a run between MA and PA to visit my elderly MIL, about 7 hours drive time with the truck/trailer, 6 with the car. I've done the math and find if I'm staying for more then a couple nights it worth taking the camper, 1 or 2 nights we stay in a hotel. The closest campgrounds that we'll use are about 30 minutes away, the hotel about 2 minutes.
700 miles RT @ 13 mpg vs 36 mpg = $161 vs $58
$30 for a state park (further away)
$50 for commercial park
$100 for hotel
Meals don't count, we buy food and cook at MIL's.
Rooms or campgrounds both need reservations during the summer and weekends, wait too long and we end up at lower end hotels, or jammed in a small site or a site with no hookups.
