Last cross country vacation we took was when we decided to get a TT.
Cost of motel room averaged $140 a night. We did not make reservations and just started looking for available lodging when we started getting tired. Sometimes that took far longer than we wanted. We started stopping earlier & earlier. On the way back we started using motel chains' locator apps. After checking in, THEN we had to search for a place to eat if the motel did not have a restaurant.
We ballparked the motel cost to make one month's TT payment and meal savings would offset the extra gas some, plus healthier food.
In the past most of my travels were getting from point A to point B.
Now, it's more enjoying the whole trip and that's where an RV excels, IMO.
I think this last big non RV trip dragging baggage and re packing was a continuing PITA with grandson's kid stuff and my wife's medical stuff.
And, yes, we had to leave our dog with our daughter.
As far as time investment goes, for a basic, eat & get some sleep overnighter in a parking lot, the RV will be faster for me than the motel/restaurant route. Setting up and packing up at a CG would be a wash. BUT I will plan my trip to make CG stays two days vs. an overnighter.
