Unless you have a rig like my buddy's DP...it has 6 cameras and a huge dash display. Image on the monitor is normally looking to the rear, but if you switch on the turn signal, the image automatically changes to what's on that side. Or, you can split the screen between the back and sides and leave it like that.
I agree for us pulling trailers, a good set of mirrors are worth every penny.
