Toad Choice

Deciding on a TOAD ...

Anyone have experience with either the Rogue or the CR-V -- we're looking at NEW not pre-worn ... :)

We'll more than likely go with FWD, not AWD or 4x4, and these two fit what we need, size and price.

We looked at Pilot and X-terra, but more bucks than we want to budget for a secondary car ....

We're looking for the SUV style vehicle ... we've not closed any doors yet as far as brand ... but we want something that can tow four down, not dolly or trailer. If we go with a dolly or trailer, then the choices are pretty much anything ---
  • Other big thing to consider is the weight of the toad - most stock hitches on gas motorhomes are rated at 5000lbs. Diesels may be higher. The CRV comes in at around 3300lbs dry, several hundred pounds more with a full tank and some gear stuffed into the back.

The heavier the toad, the more it will affect your MH fuel MPG.

  • Yes - thanks - we're just starting to look around -- so, trying to get info, then get into which one we like.

We will definitely, no doubt, check with the book, not the salesman ...

We like the Rogue, size good, and we looked at the FWD, but might see if it has AWD, which it OK too ... We have a starting budget, but as usual, need to stretch it as you get info, or the budget is worthless ...

We're attempting to stay in the Rogue / CR:V budget, maybe others in that line-up ... if we can't, then we go to X-terra and Pilot next -- rather not, but will do what we must to stay safe and still get our TOAD use.
  • We are towing a 12 CRV Awd 4 down (13,14 Crv's are the same). The owners manual state that the (2)FWD can be towed 4 down or on a dolly, the AWD can only be towed 4 down.
When looking at new vehicles, ask to see the owners manual for that specific vehicle, if it is not in the glovebox. Look under recreational towing or towing behind a MH. DO NOT take the salesperson's word.
  • We have a 2014 CR-V AWD EX-L that we love. We've towed it for ~3,000 miles since buying it in January. We have a Blue Ox baseplate on it and it is barely visible. We installed a "Toad Charge" rather than remove fuses or install a fuse switch. Our average mpg is 24-26. All you have to do is follow the simple "pre-towing" steps provided in the owner's manual.
  • If a standard transmission is OK with you, look at Subaru. No automatic transmissions are towable though.
  • Only the AWD CR-V can be towed four-down, if that helps any.

If you're going for stick shift, you may have many other options - - but for automatic, the only two SUV crossover types we found when we bought two years ago were the CR-V and the Ford Fusion (I think) Hybrid. And none of the dealers we checked had the Fords in stock yet. So we bought the Honda. No regrets.

  • There are only a very few FWD vehicles that can go 4 down so be sure!
  • Check out the new jeep that is a replacement for the liberty. Consumer report didn't rate it very good but have seen then towed and read that folks who tow them love them. I towed a liberty for 13 years. Also not rated very high but great to tow
