I do not mind doing that. Is there an disadvantage as far as convenience of hooking up to the DP or is the same as a hard wire?

nope. when you're hooked up to the MH the umbilical connects to the second wiring harness/second set of bulbs in the taillight assembly. when you're not hooked up and driving the toad when you brake you use the toad's original wiring and bulbs. clean. simple. no diodes to install or blow which eliminates nasty surprises.
