Tomax Tires

Shame on Keystone for selling 5th wheels with these tires. I have a 2014 Montana and had a tire blow with 4,000 miles in it. Forgive me for being a novice, but had I known these were cheap chinese 5 ply tires when I purchased this rig, I would have demanded dealer replace with something better before I drove out of lot.
I know there have been other complaints about Tomax tires. Replace them if you have them!
The challenge these days is to find any trailer tire not made in china.

  • There are a lot of myths out there about tires.

One of them is all ST tires are only rated for 65 mph. Well most are, but not all.

One of them is all Chinese tires are junk, no but the cheap ones are. But then that is certainly true of cheap tires made anywhere.

One of them is the myth that you don't need to check your tires every day. While I don't check the pressure every day, I look at every tire before we hook up and hit the road, both truck and trailer.

Then there is the myth the LT tires are "better" then ST tires. Proponents of this myth often quote tire companies that only make LT tires. However if you check with a tire company that makes both LT and ST tires, they will tell you that ST tires are better for trailers.

The best advise is pay as much as you can afford for tires (for every vehicle) and look at them (for every vehicle) more often then once every 6 months.
  • Its not just Keystone, almost every RV mfg uses these same or similar tires. When the market demands lower priced RV's, the mfg responds with cheap components. Those tires are not the only item in your RV that was selected on low price not quality. Just tell Keystone you'd prefer to pay $10,000 more for that same RV and they'll gladly upgrade the components.

  • Yes, shame on you for expecting new tires on a $60,000 trailer to last more than 4,000 miles. Kidding of course. But I also bought a new 5th wheel and did my research THEN found, like you, that the manufacture put the cheapest tires on the rigs. I blame the government, manufacturers and buyers for not demanding better. The more we spread the word like these forums the more we can demand upon purchase bargaining. I've got a similar long story about tires and had the RV maker reimburse me. Good luck.
  • Often the ST tire gets lots of complaints, and the real culprit is abuse, not country of origin. These tires have a maximum speed rating of 65 MPH and that probably has been exceeded many times by a substantial percentage by the delivery driver and even the owner.

The better choice for a any trailer tire is the LT tire.

I try to avoid anything Chinese made for a variety of reasons.
