Total Umbilical Replacement

Hope I posted this in the right section. I just bought a pre-owned trailer last weekend and, alhtough I didn't think it was a problem, the umbilical cord looks like it got chewed by some squirrels. Before I take it to get MD inspected, I am going to replace the complete cord. I'd like to know if this is something an electrician has to do, or it is something I can possibly do myself. I follow directions and pics very well. I consider myself semi-handy with trailer fixes. :) Thanks.

Absolutely! Next issue? Ugh! I hope I can go camping before the next issue pops up! Lol:)

  • I figured it out! I was missing a black wire with the blue brake controller wire. Now all is well!
  • Just completed this task! Tested everything out and it seems all the lights work, i.e. flashers, left, right, running and brake lights. Now my P2 is acting as if it's not connected to the trailer. Hmmm, scratching head! (But I am getting a brake light on the trailer). I took pics of the junction box prior to taking everything apart so I would know how to put everything back. Maybe one of the black wires is misconnected?

If the harness runs to a junction box then its a straight forward swap, you will need wire ends and a good set of wire pliers, screwdriver and some wire ties and a couple of hours..

If the harness is hardwired into individual wires then it could go either way... some easy and some difficult..

No way to tell until you look..

A word of caution... not all harnesses use the same color code..

Thanks!! There is a junction box! I really appreciate it.
