Touring East Coast Megalopolis?

We are thinking about a trip east next summer and would like to see some of the highlights of Philadelphia (Independence Hall)and New York City(Statue of Liberty, Times Square, etc.), but we are country folks, and I know I don't want to drive in that mess, let alone tow the trailer. I was wondering if we could camp somewhere outside the city and catch a Gray Line Tour or something. Anyone do something similar or have suggestions?

  • It sounds like you might be better off spending a few nights in hotels/motels. I drove the DC beltway for nearly 30 years and had an apartment in Manhattan some of that time. And I left our trailer miles outside of DC on our last visit to relatives there. We just drove through Denver on I-25 Thursday at 1 p.m. with our trailer, and it was no fun. And while there was some stop and go, it was a cakewalk compared to the cities you're visiting.

Maybe 13 years living out of cell phone range is wearing on my driving skills.
  • Thanks to all for the replies. The Liberty Marina RV park looks well located, but how is the traffic getting to it? Is the train from Lancaster practical for day-tripping into the cities? I guess I need to do a Google search for Lancaster train.

Stay in Lancaster and take the train
  • Liberty Marina and RV Park in Jersey City, New Jersey, is a very good place to stay. It is just a large gravel parking lot with water and electric hookups. It is a very short walk to catch a commuter ferry to Manhattan or walk a little further and ride a train under the Hudson to Manhattan and switch to the NYC subway system. I think it was the Grey Line bus tour (double decker red buses) that we took in the city and it was the highlight of our trip. Have a great trip.
