Tow Dolly

What are the pros and cons of a tow dolly with:
1. Electric Brakes controlled by prime mover brakes OR,
2. Surge brakes on the Dolly Tongue/Hitch.
Thanks for your answers.

  • I have towed our tow master with surge brakes several thousand miles with a 2010 accord on it. It has towed flawlessly and given great service. Things I don't like about it, hard to get traction loading when wet. Had to use 2x6 boards to keep air dam from rubbing.
  • I have an Acme E-Z tow dolly, with surge disk breaks. I tow a Madza Tribute (sm SUV).
With a 30 ft. Class C. Ford V10. I put 13,000 miles on it this year with no problems, other than tires. ( pot holes and a curb ). Love the surge brakes. With the surge brakes and the tow-haul feature long descents were no problem.
  • I know you asked about a dolly but if your car is towable 4-down that would be the best option. If buying a new car get one that can be towed.
  • Thanks for the replies. Nice to see no trouble with surge brakes.
    I tow a Fiat 500 and it can't be towed 4 down.
I suppose I can put a tongue jack with wheel so I can maneuver it at the camp site after unloading. I almost 77 and not as strong as I once was.

  • Harbor Freight (and other stores) has a trailer dolly with a handle on it for moving trailers around. Cost: about $60.
I bought one, and modified it with wingnuts so that I could take it apart easily and carry it in the basement compartment of the motorhome. It worked great moving the car dolly around!
Since I sold the dolly (a mistake, for sure!), I use it to move the ATV trailer around the place.
The tires have no air in them, but the trailer I use it on doesn't have that much tongue weight, so it really doesn't matter.
  • We have the ACME tow dolly with surge brakes also. It has served us well. As far as moving it around it does not weigh much in the tongue and can be stored upright if needed. We use it for our Toyota and pull our jeep four down.

We had an ACME with the surge brakes and were totally happy with it. Only got rid of it because we no longer had a vehicle that could be towed on a dolly. We now have another vehicle that can and when we go back to towing, it will more than likely be another ACME with the surge brakes. With the surge brakes there is no adjusting of the brakes. The weight of the car pushing activates the surge brakes.
