Much better asked in our Dinghy Towing Forum. The rule of thumb was Transfer in Neutral and Transmission in Park. Remembering the Steering Column cannot be Locked.
In later models, the presence of a Transfer Case doesn't automatically mean the 4x4 it's in is towable. The Transfer Case might not have a Neutral at all. Or, it might need a special kit to get it into Neutral if it's electrically shifted. Or, the Transfer Case might be of a design that does not lube itself when the transmission isn't turning it.
You may have to dig up the Make/Model of the Tranfer Case and post that. New Process Gear Co. made lots of those, so a term like "NP203" would mean something to many 4x4 lovers, and a LOT to some of them.
