Towing a 2003 F150 4X4 Behind a Class A - Will it work?

If your 4x4 is "automatic", then you will need to look at options like a driveshaft disconnect. If you have a selector knob on the dash that lets you choose 4x2 or 4x4 there is a kit available from Ford that lets you put the transfer case into neutral (between 4H and 4L). I have that kit installed on my 2002 Explorer Sport Trac. It requires a computer update so has to be done by the dealer. I forget what I cost, but I think it was in the neighborhood of $500.

If the F150 has a N position (small push button you press with a pen) then yes it's flat towable.

As far as the MH. Make sure their is plenty of leftover CCC so that can bleed over to what you can tow. And make sure the hitch is rated for the weight of the truck. My MH is rated for 5k lbs, but I have 2k lbs leftover from my 4K lb CCC? So theoretically I am good for 7k lbs, but I'm limited by the hitch. If I wanted to go that high I would have to get very very accurate weights before I did anything.

Don't make any assumptions. It's a good idea to start with the towing guides.

***Manual transfer case only (not electronic shift-on-the-fly 4x4). Requires that the center disconnect be locked out by capping off one of the front axle vacuum motor lines.

I assume I wouldn't have to worry about the front drive shaft since the truck would already be in 2WD mode.

I did call a local shop that installs the drive shaft. It's in the $2,000 USD range, before adding the towing setup. All of this is a heck of a lot cheaper than buying a new truck or Jeep.

Ford says no. Call Remco and ask them, which if possible might be more cost than it's worth. Plus you have front wheel drive shafts. My guess not possible/practical. Plus towing setup cost.

There was notible towing difference between my 3,200 lb CRV and 5,400 lb GC.

Assuming the RV I buy has the towing capacity to handle my F150, am I correct that I'll need something like this to make it work?

I have a towing weight calulation spreadsheet that I use when towing a TT. I need one for an RV for this very reason. I never want to be that guy who's overloaded and unsafe.

the amount of weight you can safely tow will be the lesser of the following:

- the gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of the MH minus the actual weight of the MH as it is loaded and configured for travel. actual or rolling weight is determined by loading the MH as you would for a trip. fill the fuel, fresh water and LP tanks. add clothes, food, supplies, etc. don't forget people. find a scale and get individual axle weights at a minimum. compare the actual axle weight to the axle weight rating (GAWR) for that axle. each axle will have a different weight rating. for every pound your mh exceeds its gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) you lose a pound of available tow weight. don't guess or assume...know.

- the weight rating of your hitch. the amount of weight your hitch is engineered to carry should be in your owner's manual.

- the weight rating of your tow bar. check the specs of your tow bar if you already have one. if not i'd look for one that is capable of towing 8000-10,000 lbs.

I see quite a number of As pulling Tahoes, Expeditions and 1/2 ton trucks...doesn’t mean it’s safe.

I'm actually pretty open.

I plan on getting something and heading out of the road for a year or so. Right now I'm trying to make the best decision, whether that's a Class A, Class C, 5th wheel, or Travel Trailer.
