  • Two biggest brands of two equipment (tow bars/base plates) are Blue Ox and Roadmaster. Both are excellent. We ourselves used the Roadmaster base plates on our previous Jeep Wrangler and currently on our 2013 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk, along with the Roadmaster Sterling tow bar. We are very pleased with the quick and easy hook/unhooking and the smooth towing.
We also have the Invisibrake auxiliary braking system installed on the Cherokee. Totally no-fuss set-up.
Hubby and I together hook up and un-hook the Jeep in about 5 minutes.
If you choose either of Roadmaster or Blue Ox, you will have a fine set-up.
  • I'm not a part of the weight police so I won't go there. You said you did your homework so thats all that matters.
As for reliable towing, I've used the Blue Ox towbar for three different MH's and 4 different toads. It has been PM'ed at Quartzsite about 4 years ago and has performed flawlessly for over 10 fulltimeing years. I also use the Blue Ox base Plates. They are well engineered for each vehicle and either invisible or nearly invisible when not towing. There are some that are well respected baseplates that look like a snow plow mount. Not attractive on your car at all. I also use the Brake Buddy for all those different MH's and tow cars. Again, flawless performance. If I had it to do over, I'd probably chose a different braking system because they have come a long way from the 12 year old unit it have....but it still works, so why spend needless money.

Syaohio, make sure that you know the towing capacity that is listed on the Coachman and then check the weight of the Grand Cherokee. You might be at the very highest limit.

    Welcome to the Forums syaohio.

Without knowing the weights of your Grand Cherokee and the loaded weight of your motorhome, we really don't know if you ARE "okay" with the weights. From what I can tell on a quick search, the Grand Cherokee can weigh between 4,545 - 5,150 lbs. depending upon model and options. Your Coachman probably has a 5,000 lb. hitch on it. But you can only use this as the maximum limit if your rig is loaded so that it's total weight is less than 21,000 lb. If your motorhome weighs in more than 21,000 lbs. then you're towing weight limit is NOT the hitch rating. It will be the GCWR of the motorhome (26,000 lbs.) less the weight of the rig and all of it's stuff. So if your rig is loaded to its GVWR of 22,000 lbs., your maximum towing limit (without exceeding the manufacturers specs) is 4,000 lbs. In other words, your rig plus your Grand Cherokee must weigh less than 26,000 lbs. combined.

You may be "okay". But for the benefit of others, we'd like to know what weight numbers you're dealing with. Most of us on here won't recommend you tow something above and beyond the limits set by the manufacturer of the motorhome.

    Good Luck,

    ~Rick

    etc.

We use the Blue Ox base plate and tow bar. It has worked excellent so I would highly recommend it.

We had the Air Force One supplemental braking system put on our toad (Honda). The air brakes on the coach apply the brakes on the toad.

I'm not sure if your coach is diesel or gas, but there are companies that make supplemental brakes systems for gas coaches too.

A trailer or tow dolly would certainly not be my first choice.

  • We have the 4WD and made sure it was towable before we purchased it...will check out that link you posted..Thank You
  • Need more information on your Jeep. Heres an excerpt from the 2014 Guide to Dingy Towing provided by www.motorhome.com. "Only 4WD vehicles equipped with Quadra-Trac II (V-6 models) and Quadra-Drive II systems (V-8 models) are towable." So your Grand Cherokee has to meet that requirement. Going forward: if it does, you can tow it four down. If not, it doesn't even show the tow dolly option, that means a trailer.
  • We have done all of that and know we are okay, but was wondering what people use to tow their vehicles, are they happy with them, pros & cons of the types used.
    etc.
  • Syaohio, make sure that you know the towing capacity that is listed on the Coachman and then check the weight of the Grand Cherokee. You might be at the very highest limit.

    Good luck,

  • What should we get to tow our vehicle...tow dolly? tow bar?, etc. or what?

Not sure what you mean by "best type of tow?" Do you mean tow bar?
