mowermech -Everything you said makes perfectly good sense. It's been a lot of years (at least 4 decades)since I had a manual transmission on the bench with the cover off. I kind of forgot about the cluster gear. As I recall it is the one that contains first and reverse, and it was the one that always lost its teeth from drag racing.
