Towing With Toyota Tacoma 4 Liter 6 Cylinder

Any opinions on towing either an R-Pod (light weight) or a Starcraft Comet (light weight) with a Toyota 6 cylinder (4 liter), The R-Pod is about 20" wide at 96"r. Both are about 3000 lb, dry.

As long as your Taco has the factory tow package, you should be fine.

And if it does not have the factory tow package, what then? The tow package includes a receiver hitch, wiring for the trailer connection, higher amp alternator, and bigger capacity battery. So what! All can be added aftermarket!

If he doesn't have the factory tow package, he should consider adding it... then he WOULD have the factory tow package.

Unless something changed, it also has a transmission cooler, oil cooler and power steering fluid cooler. Yea, they can be added but that's a lot of work. Also the newer Tacoma's have an electronic trailer sway control system. Not sure if that can easily be modded after the fact.
  • I used to pull a Skamp though the mountains with a 2.6 Mazda and did fine. Keep overall weight to around 5k lbs and you should not have problems.
  • Should be no problem with those trailers but DO push it hard on grades. It needs to rev to be in the power band. Don't be afraid of 4k+ rpm if needed, won't hurt a thing. In fact, pulling hills at high rpm will put less strain on the engine, produce less heat and burn less fuel than pulling with the engine lugging at low rpm.
  • I've got the new 2017 3.5 liter V-6 with tow package, I Tow a 17 foot Casita. Handles it just fine. Just keep the tranny in 4th gear and you'll be fine. When going up hills, just let the engine do it's thing. Haven't found a hill it won't climb yet. Remember, RPM's make power.

  • It should do fine. Keep it out of overdrive, and don't push hard up long, steep grades. I towed similar trailers all over the place with a 3.5L v6 Highlander. Now I have a 4.7L v8 in a Lexus GX. Good towing machines.
