TPMS question?

What is the difference between a flow through and a non flow through tire pressure monitoring system (besides price)? Is one system better than the other?

I have the flow through. The air flow is somewhat slow, but if I am only topping a tire off, it is OK. If I had an almost flat tire, I would just remove it while adding air, then re-install it. That is what you would have to do anyway if you had the non-flow through.

I've not experienced this with the flow-through sensors with my TST 507. Topping off 5 lbs through the sensors no different than topping off 5 lbs in my TV ... which ... have internal OEM sensors!

So much for that comparison! If there is any slowing, it isn't a problem.

Actually, if I was buying now, I would consider the flow through sensors. They were not available when I bought my old TST 507 system. Seems like a good idea.
  • I've got flow through sensors on the rear and non-flow through on the front. The non flow throughs on the front are due to the larger size of the flow throughs, they will not fit through the stem opening in the wheel simulator. This all works out fine, I am adjusting tire pressure in the rear much more often than the front. One sensor in the rear has low flow but it may be due to a blockage in the solid metal stem it is attached to.

  • The flow through are longer and stick out from the rim further.

I installed a set on my pickup. When I noticed how far they stuck out past the rim I was afraid I may drag them off if I were ever to get in deep mud or snow.

I sent them back for the standard sensor. Most of the time I have only had to make a pressure adjustment once year. With the TPMS there is no chance of loosing air to check pressures like can happen with a tire gauge.
  • C-bears answered your question. I have had both. $20 each to have sensors rebuilt when the batteries die on the regular TST 510 system. Opted for a new 507 with the flow-through sensors. Much more convenient but they are a bit larger! Nice to be able to change batteries without sending them back to the factory!
  • The only real difference is that with the flow through you can add or deflate pressure without taking the sensor off you valve stem. I went with flow through with the user replaceable batteries. I believe some of the older TPMS's used to have to be sent in to have batteries replaced every few years.
  • The flow through lets you add air without removing the sensor. I don't have that type, but what I hear is that they take the air very slowly, so as to make them less than useful. I would not spend the extra for that feature. JMO
