- Francesca_KnowlExplorerPer "choice" of using/not using existing brakes on second trailer:
Do check your State laws...In most jurisdictions, if a trailer has brakes they MUST be active when it's under tow. No matter where it is in the train! - RCMAN46ExplorerI tow a 7x12 utility trailer behind my 28 ft 5th wheel trailer. I tapped into the trailer brakes at the 5th wheel Axle where the main feed comes from the pin box. I installed a standard 7way at the hitch on the 5th wheel. There is some voltage drop at the utility trailer compared to the 5th wheel. I found this is just about right as the my utility trailer requires about 2 less volts to lock the brakes as the 5th wheel requires.
If the cargo trailer has brakes by all means use them. If you ever have to get on the brakes hard to avoid an accident you will be glad you connected the brakes. - nevadanickExplorerIf it has brakes they should be used. You can check the model brake controller specs you have to see how many axles it will support. If its not up to the number of axles then you will need a second controller. Dont let the naysayers discourage you about towing doubles, just check the laws in the states you travel.

Before you start thinking about brakes and controllers...make sure it is legal tow tow doubles..many states it is not.
