Transfer tanks...anybody use one?

I am about to have an RDS AUXILIARY fuel tank installed in the bed of my F350. RDS has both transfer as well as auxiliary fuel tanks available in many sizes. I am getting the 40 gallon/tool box combo, at least partly because it sits below the bed rails so I may still be able to use a tonneau cover too.

Cost for the tank is about $680.

The tank will be directly connected to the OEM fuel tank inlet hose via a kit they also sell ($80). RDS tanks are available through Northern Tool Co. as well as other places. Take a look at the RDS site, then go to Northern Tools and type in the model you're looking for or just do the Google thing.

Looks like a good company BUT they don't make replacement tank for GAS engines only diesel.

Swapped out the factory 26 gallon tank on our 2006 Dmax, for a 52 gallon Titan tank. The Titan tank replaces the factory tank. Could not be more pleased. I can tow for 8 hours before having to look for a place to refuel. One of the best mods that I've made to the Dmax.

I have a transfer flow and it is great. I really like driving by the gas stations.

I have one I got for Christmas. :) It's a 37 gallon tank from the farm store and a 12V pump and nozzle from Craigslist. It's more inconvenient to use than a Transfer Flow, but it's also about $1000 cheaper. :) It gives me about 70 gallons total.

It's wonderful to be free from worrying about fueling stops. I just fuel up at the end of the day when the toyhauler is unhooked. Truck stops work fine when you stick to interstates but are fewer when you're on the back roads.

In the interest of conserving bed space, I would go with one of the replacement tanks like Transfer Flow. I put one in my Toyota Tundra and went from 26 to 47 gallons. It takes all of the stress out of trying to find fuel, gas or diesel.

Take a look at the replacement tank in my signature line. It replaces the original tank and holds 52 gallons. All computer functions work normally after the replacement except "range" since the computer still thinks the original tank is still there, but doubling the range in my head is easy.


I have had this replacement for over 5 years.

If you only want to carry a little bit of fuel, a couple 5 gallons jugs are a lot cheaper and easier to move around. Ten gallons should get an extra 100 miles. If you go with the tank, you still have to plumb it in or buy and hook up a pump. If you still want to go this route, go visit a local boat shop like a Bass shop or a West Marine.

If you want steel, look in the yellow pages under welding shops, tank welding, or even septic tanks - most them make fuel tanks also.
