And just wait until we get television and the telephone....;) - dbblsExplorerI drove to Alaska and in much of Canada and was never off of a paved road except for areas in construction. Roads in Canada are just like in the US.
- AKSuperDuallyExplorerThe only gravel areas I ran into were construction areas. That was probably a total of 100 miles over the 2500 mile trip. Some roads would have been smoother if they were gravel though....
The roads can be rough, no one can deny that....but I've been on worse highways in Arkansas..... Those slabs with 6-8" gaps and crumbled potholes are worse than most frost heaves. At least Canada marks the heaves and gives warning to hazards. - poncho62Explorer

- donn0128Explorer IISounds like a fable from someone that has never traveled in Canada. Canada is NOT a third world country. While the severe winter weather can cause problems on some roads, they are repaired during the spring and summer. Now 97 is a beautiful drive. From your home, head up I5 to Portland, I205 and I84 to Biggs junction. Pick up US97 there and head north. Follow your GPS to head east at I90 jogging through eastern WA up near Grand Coulee picking up 97 up north. There are so many places to spend a night. At the border crossing be prepared to a detailed search. Apparently this crossing gets a lot of drug traffic.
