Please, no flaming here. But I don't think the western U.S. is all that dangerous as compared to anywhere else. Particularly in back country. We met a lot of hikers and they weren't armed with anything but knife and/or hatchet so they could build a fire.
I found the same thing last year when I pulled my TT 8,000 miles in 8 months. And we stopped at truck stops, rest stops, Casinos, Sams Club, Walmarts,etc. Never once had a need for a hand gun or even close to a need for it.
