traveling with firearms

okay so i am going fulltiming may 1st . plan on wintering in texas next winter . so most of my travels this season will be out west ,,,as much as i can see . my question is about firearms . does anyone have any tips of traveling with them ,,,,, legally and safely,,,, i have the nessersary license.
  • ya know im going to let this one go ,,,,your right ,,,, ill do some more reasearch ,,,,i am aware of the state to state laws ,,,,i think i was being nieve ,,,thinking there would be some advice from strangers on a serious subject like this ,,,,and yes its too bad we dont have an across the board license .
  • if you have an iphone there is an app called legal heat it is about cc laws
  • Your RI CCW only has reciprocity with 20 other states.....mostly mid-west/central states. Nothing west coast.

Best thing to do is keep them inside your RV.......don't open carry from RV to vehicle when transporting to go target shooting.

Don't tell........unless asked by an LEO (cause LEO already knows you have a CCW and you don't want to get caught lying to them)

    Otherwise Nobody's Business.

Be smart, be cautious, be safe
  • Asking legal questions of anyone other than a licensed attorney is a really bad idea. Google the topic, read up on it, and stay away from asking in open internet forums like this one. There isn't a single soul here who will stand up in front of a judge with you and defend you. But I'll wager folks with opinions about the topic will flood out of the woodwork.

And that's just my opinion. You want to stay out of prison; ask somebody who knows, an attorney, not the faceless hordes on the internet.
  • If you think you have the "necessary license" I think you have a lot of learning to do. Just about every state has different rules and licensing requirements. Some recognize the license of another state, some do not. Some only recognize the license of certain other states.
I'm licensed for concealed carry in VA but MD and NY could care less. If I show up in those states with my handgun I'm likely going to jail. So, when I go to western NY state to see my in-laws I leave the gun at home. The laws of those 2 states force me to leave my family unprotected for the whole trip.
Long guns are a bit less of an issue but still problematic. You will need to do lots of research on every states official legal website. Even then, unfortunately, many police officers aren't up on all the laws. There are lots of helpful people on this website but the last thing I would do is risk felony charges based on what someone on an internet forum told me. Do your research.
It's a sad state of affairs. I wish we could have a carry license that is recognized everywhere just like a drivers' license but we don't.

    In Rhode Island?
  • I suggest you do a google search for 50 state gun laws and purchase one of the booklets and read first...do NOT take anyones word for it. You get stopped here in NY you are screwed big time.

  • I'm confused. Don't know what necessary license means. Are you a retired LEO? If so you are OK. Except in CA if you have more than 7 rounds in a magazine. Unless you are from and worked in CA. Not like the old days. Fortunately I worked in CA. Think you need to be more explicit in necessary license. Don't want to be political but don't understand what liberal means either. Seems like the law. What ever it is refers to all people. Democrats, Republicans, Independents, liberals, conservatives or what ever your affiliation. I doubt anybody gets excused from the firearms law. Everyone should check the state laws for every state they are going to visit.
  • Buy a nice little 20 gauge auto. you will be legal in any state.

Hand gun laws vary state to state. Open carry states may be Legal to carry not concealed but open carry scares the hell out of liberals and they have phones.
