TW = 690 Get 750 or 1K spring bars?

Brand new/first time owner of a not so brand new trailer. Picked up a 2001 Thor Wanderer Lite 240MS over the weekend.

Never had one before, total noob, I'm trying to learn how to hitch/tow/set it up.

First order of business is a WDH hitch. Have decided to get a Blue Ox Sway Pro. Main attractions to my inexperienced eye being the simplicity and ease of use.

So... Just loaded up the trailer as if for a trip, filled the water tank etc. Then weighed the tongue at 690 lbs.

Should I order the hitch with 750 pound bars, or 1,000 pound bars?

At 690 TW, I guess it might be obvious to get the 750 bars. But while the trailer is fully loaded now, it's not hard to imagine somehow getting a little more tongue weight on it at some point?

How much if any wiggle room is there on the weight rating of the bars?

Maybe getting the 1,000 bars would be better to allow some room for added weight?

Or, would the ride be too negatively effected by having the stiffer than really necessary bars?

Another possible fly in the ointment... I know that adding weight in the bed of the tow vehicle behind the rear axle counts as tongue weigh in as far as the specified capacity of the truck is concerned. But does this added weight in the tow vehicle count as far as determining the proper WDH bars to get? If so, then I should get the 1K bars, as no doubt there will at times be some additional weight in the bed of the truck.

Your thoughts are much appreciated!

  • 1000 lbs... any weight added to the truck counts toward capacity it doesn't have to be behind the rear axle.
  • You're probably going to get a lot of opinions on this, since it's a measured tongue weight and so close to the 750 cut off. I'd opt for the heavier bars to make sure you get the job done. Just me.
