UTG axles identification?

I have a mid 70's 5th wheel deck over beaver tail tri axle trailer that began life as a bumper pull tandem.

It was originally 7' wide and 16' deck.It is now 18' with a 4' beavertail by 102" wide.

Somewhere along the way a reputable trailer/welding shop extended and widened it and added the 5th wheel hitch and an extra axle.

The frt 2 axles are original Dexter UTG axles with bolt on backing plates as are commonly found, however the back axle has UTG brake hubs but where the backing plate mates with the backing plate anchor/mount the mount is a much larger diameter. The mount is 8" in diameter.

In all my research there is no indication that it is a mobile home axle but nor can I find a matching backing plate.

Has anyone else ever run into this situation?

Sorry not enough posts to load pictures, will try to find another way.

Here is some imageshack pictures, sorry for the quality but it's a dreary day here:

The last picture in the sequence is the larger backing plate mount.

  • Got at the trailer today and it turns out the big backing plate axle is a light duty mobile home axle.

Small bearings and rough machined snout.

Moderator edit to re-size picture to forum limit of 640px maximum size.

  • have yet to get back at the trailer, spring is happening much too fast here.

Figured I would bump this up a little to attract some new attention maybe-anyone able to help identify the big backing plate axle?
  • Seems I left that out of my post.

I did contact the manufacturer and their records did not go back that far, they had been under new ownership since the trailer was built so the current owners could not help.

The trailer serial # is 001.
i intend to get the trailer inside and get th hubs taken apart to try and gleen some more info soon ,but currently the door is frozen shut-need a little milder weather.
  • Since you know that the axle was added by a "reputable welding shop", is there any chance that you could ask them about the axle?
  • Here is the axle you are talking about.

    Here is your trailer.
