Video of TT flips over on Parkway Monday

Monday July 24,2017 New Jersey Parkway
A driver is lucky to be alive after the SUV he was driving overturned while towing a camper on a busy New Jersey highway Monday afternoon.

Yup I can tow that!

Wait, wait, wait for it......
A too long trailer and a too small SUV towing it.

This video should be the standing reply to:
1. Can I tow this?
and
2. I tow this and there is no problem.

AND more importantly. I think that those that insist they can and dismiss the advice not to, should take a good long hard look at how close that TT accident came to killing someone in the cars around him. :(

  • A lot has changes since I lived back there but I thought that trailers were not allowed on the GSP unless that rule has changes. I do recall that I think trucks were allowed south of exit 109(?) Perhaps this was south of that exit and trailers are allowed?
  • Here is a picture of another one caused by sway.

Both hitches were better than the B&W 5th wheel hitch.
  • Why does the video and the original post say a SUV overturned, am I not watching the same video? the link provided by the OP is wrong maybe? I see an RV trailer overturned, but the SUV remaining upright.
  • Hopefully he wasn't also one of those folks that think it is ok for the pets to ride in the trailer while underway.
  • Bet the groceries spilled in the fridge...and his 'groceries' spilled in his pants....:E
  • Too little hitch weight. Inexperience. Worthless friction sway bar. It goes on and on...
  • Agree it's a lot of trailer for the tv, but there's probably more than one factor causing the accident and there's nothing saying a pu would have saved the day.

The GSP is an incredibly fast road...what was his speed? As pointed out, did he apply the trailer brakes (inexperience)? What started the away? Was it the passing vehicle or was he texting/talking on the phone? Was the trailer properly loaded?

Local TV just showed that video and what started as a small amount of sway got much worse with it taking up several lanes before flipping over. Very clear on a 50" TV that the drive never put on the trailer brakes which would have stopped the swaying. Swaying that gets worse is because of not enough tongue weight which putting on just the trailer brakes will increase.

Appears to be a 35' TT behind a Ford Expedition.
