We have a thetford 35 gallon and depending on the distance and terrain, I could pull ours as well. If its up hill any or mote than a couple hundred feet, forget it. We haven't taken ours with us in over a year. We can easily go a weekend without dumping and anywhere we have gone for a longer period has had sewer hook ups on site.
I would go with the ladder idea. And is how we would carry it now. Some people don't want people to see it for some reason. I think they have adversions to people knowing they have waste. No different to me than seeing waste port sticking out underneath a camper. Seeing one strapped on the back of a camper tells me that they are prepared and like to camp without hookups.
