If you have an iPhone, and it isn't jailbroken, once iOS 7 comes out, upgrade to it. The reason for this is that stolen iPhones/iPods/iPads with iOS 7 will not activate and be usable in any form until the owner's account ID and password are entered.
Android, who knows. My phone is insured, and I use Titanium Backup to copy my critical stuff, then Titanium Media Sync to push it to Dropbox. I also use multiple layers of encryption, including a separate password to encrypt the /data partition than I do the screen locker.
