Water Filters

When I winterized, I pulled my water filter cartridge out as normal with the idea that I would replace it in the Spring. To my surprise I find that it costs anywhere from $50 to $80 to buy a replacement. There are none available on Amazon under Amazon Prime and the dealership wants $77 for it. It is a 3M filter for recreational vehicle/marine undersink Model A1. Others offer it for less but when shipping is applied, it goes right up to $60-$70. Isn't that a lot for a water filter? I checked to see if it filters out something in particular that is bad for you but it appears to be a run of the mill filter like one would have in their refrigerator at home which I can replace for around $35.

On my previous TT's I installed undersink water filter systems by name brand companies but discovered that after a year the filters became hard if not impossible to find. Is this an industry standard? Is there a filter system that does a good job, isn't exorbitantly expensive and doesn't go into obsolescence in a short time?
