. . . we've been working hard towards getting rid of disposable bottles. There's just so much waste with them.
I think if we weren't fulltime and had a home, we would still use our Berkey water filter and would just refill containers from it. Take it to the camper when we go camping.
Install an under sink RO (Reverse Osmosis) system. Here's what Berkey says about RO systems (My comments in
BLUE):
The Benefits of Considering Reverse Osmosis:
Improves Taste - Reverse Osmosis has the ability to remove specific contaminants that cause the water to have an unwanted odor, taste, and even appearance.
Easy Maintenance - Reverse Osmosis has no complicated set-ups nor designs. It easy to assemble and remove. Also, cleaning and replacing it is not difficult because it is only composed of a few replaceable parts.
Eliminates Impurities - Reverse Osmosis is a water purification method that can remove various contaminants. Such as pesticides, sulfates, bacteria, arsenic, pharmaceutical and more. It also contains a carbon filter which eliminates chlorine and chloramines that are found in the water. Reverse Osmosis filtration is fully automated, reasonably practical and ensures efficiency and safety.
The Disadvantages of Reverse Osmosis:
It is costly - In-home set-ups can be an expensive alternative. They can cost a lot to set up and to keep up as filters should be taken over much of the time and are not reasonable.
Berkey filter = $224.
Berkey Replacement Filters (set of 2) = $120
Undersink RO system = iSpring 5-Stage RO System = $159
RO Replacement Filters = Replacement Filters + RO Membrane = $36.86 + $12.99
Expels minerals from the water — such as salt, lead, manganese, iron, and calcium, as well as certain chemicals.
Minerals can be added back in with this Mineralizer Filter = $24.39
Waste of Water - This system wastes a considerable measure of water. You wind up with a significant measure of water waste contrasted with separated water— about three gallons of water for each gallon it filters.
An RV RO System can be plumbed so that the RO waste water ("brine") goes back into your water tank to be used for showers, etc.
On the other hand, if you must have bright and shiny, then get a Berkey.
