I too hate the wet, over priced little bundles of kindling that they sell as firewood. Funny story... my father in law is a contractor and saves up scrap old lumber from jobs (mostly 2x4 and trim). He went to a local state park last year and tried to burn his wood, they wouldn't let him because they said you can't bring wood in from outside the park. This is 40 or 50 year old kiln dried wood. No bugs, no chemicals... good clean wood. The irony is that they let him keep the wood in his truck... in the park... but wouldn't let him burn it. Seems to me that if they were scared of ash beetles or whatever, burning the wood would likely kill a lot of them. Letting the wood (and any potential ash beetles) sit in his truck for a 3 day weekend would let a lot more ash beetles crawl away and infect trees.
Later in the trip he watched as a local tree contractor came and dumped a load of split firewood (obviously fresh from a recent job). The campground tried to sell it for an outrageous price. This is wood that was obviously brought in from outside the park. He went up to the girl at the office and asked why they sell fresh wood from outside the park, but he can't burn his wood from outside the park. He didn't get an answer...
Either the park staff were sadly misinformed, or they were trying to protect their wood sales.
Emerald Ash borer requires a wood with bark on it to spread.
