For years we did nothing ....until..... A lightning strike that tripped our garage breaker for 11 days. In our garage we had a freezer and a refrigerator. It also took out all our house phones, several tvs, amplifier on tower antenna and rotor. Now we have neighbor that checks on house and picks up our mail. Oh man, the garage smelled like there was a dead body, it was AWFUL. I have weak stomach so DH had to dig hole in back of property after we froze all the rotten stuff and bury it. Lesson learned....get to know a trustworthy neighbor. We do turn off hot water heater and AC.
