- LaurenExplorerI am like cpaulsen - two WalMart or similar ones - one in refer and one in freezer. Good enuf.
I hadda laf at waitingtogo though! Only reason we have them as we have had refer issues in the past. Right now again it runs constantly - think thermistor is shot and also the fan switch. We just let it run - "warmest" setting and it keeps the off reading at 30 in the refer (nothing is freezing)and the freezer at -10.
I do shut it down for a few hours daily to give it some time off.....refer goes to about 36 or so and and the freezer to zero.
Will get it fixed when we get home in a month. - waitingtogoExploreri hope i never get so bored that i watch the temperature fluctuate in the fridge.

I use my hand. Much cheaper, works well, and doesn't require batteries.
Me too. I put my hand around a can of beer and instantly know how everything is in the frig. - georgelesleyExplorer

The acurite is hard to beat. If you use a 'wired' unit, then even a thin wire through the freezer/fridge gasket can cause problems. Be sure ANY battery type unit (like the acurite) that goes in the FREEZER has lithium batteries NOT alkaline, normal, or rechargeable. The lithium are not affected by the below freezing temps as are the others and will last longer.
I am a weather reporter for a local TV station. Living in Northern MN, I am familiar with how batteries handle low temps. Alkaline batteries are OK until -21.9 deg. At that temp they freeze. Lithium are good to -39. I was cautioned by Lacross, who make many wx stations including mine, not to use lithium batteries in the main display unit as they are not compatible with the electronics.
Bottom line: use alkaline batteries for refer and freezer applications. - FrankShoreExplorer

We use an AcuRite dual fridge/freezer remote reading thermometer. It shows us the two temps as well as min/max readings, and also has alarm settings to warn us if the temps get too far out of range.
