The wheels on my 2012 GMC Terrain remain in a straight position when I go around corners as if they were lock but they are not. The car is in neutral with the key in the on position. After three months of of testing at RV and GM dealerships we are no closer to fixing the problem. Everything checked out on the vehicle and it has even been modified to adjust caster in the otherwise stationary alignment. The next thing they want to try are tires. Dose anyone have any experience with this problem?

Sounds like the steering wheel is not being unlocked. It must be something in the steering column set-up.What type of drive is in your rig? AWD, four wheel drive? What transfer case?After inserting the key, does the steering wheel turn?

Since you've indicated the key is in the ignition and the steering wheel is unlocked, there aren't many other potential causes.About the only solution I would suggest at this point is to have someone ride in the truck while it is being towed and have that person try and turn the wheel in the correct direction when you make a turn. If the truck's wheels turn in the direction your coach turned, then you'll know it is a "following" problem. That is, the suspension and steering system in the truck won't respond to being pulled around a corner. If that's the case, it is a basic design flaw that probably can't be changed.On the other hand, the person in the truck may be able to tell right away what the problem is and it could be a simple thing like not leaving the key in the right position.

are you pulling fuse #32 to disable the ign system and the electric power steering assist. You might want to try that

Have someone ride in the car for a short distance (around the block). The tires on my tow do not turn much, sometimes I wonder if things are OK, but over 100K miles of towing things are good. If you can see steering wheel of towed in rearview camera tie a rag around top center of steering wheel and monitor its movement.

Is the hitch ball at the same level as the hitch at the vehicle? Substantial differences in height can cause such a problem.

This was the correct answer except I believe he meant to say "a path intended by the driver"

In other words steering wheel is straight ahead and the power steering will maintain that even when the wheels are trying to turn when the TV turns.

Good information for anyone that wants to tow a vehicle with electric steering.

Thank you all for your input. The solution to my problem after 5 months was to put a disconnect switch between the engine compartment fuse box and the electric power steering motor. The power steering was holding the wheels in the straight forward position.

My BIL bought a used toyota tacoma and had the same issue. Seems it had been in an accident and repaired and the front springs were off just a little thus causing the axle to be off line from side to side. Had to reinstall front spring hangers to ensure they were lined up. towed straight great but had a hard time with turns until repaired.

Anyone actually check the alignment? Lots of mechanics looked at it but if they didn't check the alignment, you could have an issue.

If the tires are not turning you'll notice excessive wear on them. Has this happened?

From 2012 Terrain owner's manual:

To tow the vehicle from the front with all four wheels on the ground:
1. Position the vehicle that will be towed and secure it to the towing vehicle.
2. Turn the ignition key to ON/RUN.
3. Shift the transmission to N (Neutral).
4. Turn the ignition key to ACC/ ACCESSORY.
5. Turn all accessories off.
6. To prevent the battery from draining while the vehicle is being towed, remove fuse 32, the Discrete Logic Ignition Switch fuse, from the instrument panel fuse block and store it in a safe location.
