- Chuck_thehammerExplorerThank You everyone..
I am currently on a 4 month trip... and need to have water in case of supply issues. ( camp ground ) LOW water pressure...etc
I am staying at various camp grounds... a few weeks here.. and a few weeks there.
bleached the tank before leaving home... 11/1/15, departed 12/1/15.. with maybe 10 gallons on board.. (holds 40 gallons)
filled up at first camp ground...
Will be drinking/cooking with the water when needed...
1 think I will drain once a month.. then refill. (camp ground supplied)
Merry Christmas everyone :) - gboppExplorer

It depends on if you have city water or well water. City water which I have has chlorine that will last a long time before it evaporates.
Do you mean chlorine prevents water from evaporating or the chlorine in the water will not evaporate? - korbeExplorer

Yes, I will first do the smell test. If the cup of water passes that test, then I will attempt the taste test. The results of that test will determine my next move. :) - tenbearExplorerI usually have full hookups and only have the fresh water tank about 1/4 full and use it between hookups. When I do boondock it is usually for 4-6 days and we fill the tank.
I only drain the tank when I winterize and sanitize the tank in the spring. I drink the water in the tank without any problems. - Boon_DockerExplorer IIII boondock most of the summer (89 days last summer). I disinfect the tank in the spring and do not drain it until the fall (I just keep adding to it).
When filling the tank with spring water or river water I add 1 tsp of bleach per 5 gallons of water. Have been doing it this way for years with no problem. - TrackrigExplorer IILet your mouth tell you when it's getting stale........
We put our MH in storage in various parts of the country when we fly home. This time, for the first time in three years, we drained the water tank because we had to winterize it. Our water has always been fine. Maybe part of this is because we run the incoming water through a three filter set up before it enters the holding tank.
Bill - OzlanderExplorerWater has been around for millions of years, so it already millions of years old. Another couple of months won't change it much.
- DutchmenSportExplorerI drain on the return home for every trip. Unless you drain your water heater at the same time you drain your fresh water tank, the water in your water heater will be much older! I've never noticed the water heater water being stale, even after a month of non-use.
Water, by itself, will last forever. It's all the "gunk" that can grow in it that's bad. So in essence, the water can sit forever in the tank. It will never changes. But all the skummies that grow in it, is what's really bad.
Considering fresh water tanks are never completely 100% empty and NEVER 100% dried out, I would imagine, you can keep water in the tank for a long time, as long as stuff doesn't start growing in it. - PapaNIes60Explorer

Some people won't drink from their tanks and only use bottled water for drinking. I use the tank for everything it was designed for including drinking. I dry camp a lot so the water never stays in the tank more than 3 weeks at a time. If you just use FHU's and let the water sit in there all summer then I would worry about it. But I'm old and still drink out of a green garden hose.
