When the blackwater is full - really full - would I see liquid right at the opening if I stepped on the foot lever on the toilet?

For me, the gauge is a guideline. Once it says it's 3/4 full, it's time to start considering emptying the tank. I don't need it to be exact - I don't push the capacity to the extent that it will mean overflowing.- We're old, irregular and never stay at a park for more than a week so the 40 gallon black tank never gets full.

At least you're honest. We've stayed a week while dry camping and the first thing (fresh, gray, black) to limit out is the fresh water.- You need to take a dump less often or dump your RV more often.
- Let the flush & burp tell sign be your guide!

Easy Peasy, when the third light lights up, dump the tanks. If the fourth light lights up, you are past due to dump.- If your a fulltimer do as we do and start with "BLACK TANK TUESDAYS".
- Those gauge lights are...well...full of it. We dump. One light is on. Make one or two 'deposits' & four lights are on again. This after doing a procedure that puts a few gallons of water into the tank to slosh around after dumping.
We stopped getting frustrated by those stupid lights long ago. We simply do a minimum of three days between dumps & don't go more than seven.
