Which add-on helper springs?

I had a set of Ride Rite air springs (bags actually) and the one side that always leaked, got out of position and wore a hole on the side. I was looking at the Roadmaster Active Suspension set but for $400, there doesn't seem to be a lot "parts" for the money.

I just need something for my 1999 F150 to handle the tongue weight of my boat trailer. Is $400 what I need to spend or is something else that's cheaper that's just as good? Thank.

  • I have Timbrins also. Work great, and trouble free. 10 minute install.
  • Roadmaster for sure. Easy to install, adjustable, does not make the ride harsh, no air to fool around with, call them and get the forum price of $325.00, Check out their website for phone number and call them. They were very helpful for me.RAS ask for Nolan.

There is a lot to be said for simplicity. RAS is an uncomplicated system that does the job.
  • Timbrens work, but I found that I had to have a spacer to make them work their best. For me, best was just touching when loaded and one inch or more gap when empty. Timbren can and will supply tech support and spacers.
  • I've got the Roadmaster Active Suspension on my Dodge...very true that there aren't many parts, but those parts work as stated...I'm very satisfied with mine.
  • These are Hellwig Progressive load helper springs. "#1500" rating.. I got these back in 2001 after buying my used F150 and tried to put a half pallet of bricks in the bed... Put it to the stops!

I think they only cost around $200, but that was over 12 years ago... Not sure what they would run now, but they were easy to install and I've not had any problem with them since and I can now carry that half pallet and not drop that much at all (half way to the stops now..)

  • I would look at amazon - search for " add a leaf "..
lots of options for well under a hundred..
FYI shorter springs tend to stiffen the ride more then longer ones - all things being equal.
