If you belong to a club that has specific designated areas for flying, like radio controlled airplanes and such, then yes, I would think they could be a lot of fun. But if you're wanting to fly one (especially with a camera) over a campground, I don't think the drone will survive.
Personally, unless you are in a secluded location, non populated, you're only asking for trouble.
I have a small RC helicopter I picked up from my local pharmacy, paid $20 for it. It flies just fine inside my house living room with cathedral ceilings. I think that's where they should stay. (keep yours in your living room, I'll keep mine in mine.)
