The facts are that there are very few reports of personal damage caused by drones. Studies have shown that they are much safer than many people make them out to be. As for shooting them down, the FAA would treat it the same as if you shot at a commercial airliner passing over. They are certified aircraft registered with the FAA and protected in the same way. If you've ever seen any drone footage from the altitudes most are flown at (300 to 400 feet) you'd see that "spying" is a completely ridiculous speculation. I'm reminded of the fear people had when horseless carriages first roamed the land :-)
Like I said in my previous thread, they really are nearly impossible to crash. The more expensive ones have pretty sophisticated anti-collision capabilities. The less expensive ones aren't big enough to do any damage to anything. I've been hit with them and lived to tell about it. I think people just don't like the idea of having a camera above their heads so they rationalize by saying they're dangerous. A lot of drones, including mine, are smart enough to know how far away they are and how much battery they need to get back. They'll automatically come back when they think they need to. They also return to home when they lose contact with the controller. Mine's a cheaper Phantom 3 SE so it doesn't have collision avoidance. I have the return-to-home altitude set at 150 feet which is higher than any obstacle where I fly. I've lost it a couple of times and just wait until I hear it coming back. It hovers until I take control back. If I can't re-establish a connection it will land itself within a couple of feet where it took off using GPS.
