I always turn my lights on when towing. If I don't see trailer running lights in the mirror, then something is amiss. That and my factory TBC reads the trailer in the middle of my dash.
It was a very bight sunny day when my cable came loose in my truck bed and I had checked it 10 minutes before that and no issue, don't know if I'd noticed rv lights on or not as bright as it was outside at the time....going down the mountain, when I applied the brakes, oops.....The factory BC, also told me I was disconnected, when I decided to look at the dash information
