In my case my parents weren't into camping when I was a youngster. We did rent a cottage at a lake a couple of times though and those were fun. When in junior high a group of us friends begged one of the fathers to take us camping at Lake Michigan. That was great fun and after that most of that group continued to camp together in a tent at Lake Michigan until we were in college. So at that point I had the camping bug and it continued through the early years of my marriage, including when my children were babies.
As my wife and I were about 15 years from retirement we finally switched from a tent to a small TT. Then 9 years later we went to a 5th wheel. All this time I was focused upon doing some serious traveling in retirement to see this America that we had only gotten in snippets.
For the past 5 years we've made a handful of 3-6 week trips, including one snowbird trip last winter, with another one planned this year for about 2 months. My mind continues to plan potential trips to places we've never been, traveling the back roads of America and Interstates (when necessary) to "see what we can see." (That's why the bear went over the mountain after all.)
Retirement gave us the freedom to use the calendar to block off periods of time for trips. Sure, we can keep busy just taking care of our house, yard, and life's daily needs, but we want more out of life than what's happening in the next 24-48 hours. Give us a good book to read under the awning, a trail to hike, a mountain to see, a beach to walk barefoot, a national treasure to witness, or new people to meet and we're happy.
Oh, I almost forgot. When I was young my brain was probably "tricked" into thinking travel was in my future. I recall Dinah Shore singing.......
See the USA in your Chevrolet
America is asking you to call
Drive your Chevrolet through the USA
America's the greatest land of all
On a highway, or a road along the levy
Performance is sweeter, nothing can beat her
Life is completer in a Chevy
So make a date today to see the USA
And see it in your Chevrolet
Traveling East, Travelling West
Wherever you go Chevy service is best
Southward or North, near place or far
There's a Chevrolet dealer for your Chevrolet car
So make a date today to see the USA
And see it in your Chevrolet.
