I would say that while there appears to be a fair amount of rap/hip-hop that utilizes offensive lyrics or subject matters, there is probably at least an equal quantity that does not. Check this song out. It actually tells a beautiful story (the English lyrics are provided)
Of course there are exceptions, but over 90 percent of rap is about hatred and disrespect and abuse, with lots of cursing. It is banned from our home and our radios.
Agreed.
When my sons were still of an age to live at home I banned "gangsta" rap but never ALL rap. The genre became famous nationally with a bouncy and innocuous tune: Rappers' Delight:B.
Every music genre has had it's controversies whether classic music (Mozart's oeuvre and official reception in Salzburg); the "Nashvilll-ization" of Country/ Western which of course is now referred to as "country" only (bet Patsy Cline and Roy Rogers are crying in their graves). As for rock, Sheesh. So many controversial at times banned in Boston sub genres within it makes my head spin. And my kiddos weren't allowed to listen to/ had the least inclination to hear anything Poison played with all it's misogynistic, hair extensioned, lil man wins the lottery and throws it away on flashy cars and booze glory.
Just for the record, "Unskinny Bop" was played as punishment in my house.....AND it probably hurt me more than them too;).
