IMHO ... that is backwards ... as the initial default position towards another human being should be one of respect.
Getting it backwards can be, and may be, a main driving force for "me first" behavior. IAW ... "I'll treat you as a valuable human being if and only if you first prove yourself worthy to me of getting treated that way by me".
Respect is to be lost later, not earned later.
I think I'm using "respect" as meaning deference rather than courtesy. I don't believe in deferring to others based on their status. I do believe in showing courtesy to others regardless of their status.
