We camp for a variety of reasons.
We camp 20 minutes down the road to spend time with friends or even hang out by ourselves. If we didn't camp, we'd just be sitting at home watching tv or doing yard work.
We also camp to see new places in an affordable manner. We are a family of 5 and even considering gas costs with pulling the camper, it's usually cheaper to pull the camper than to drive or fly and rent a condo. We went 600 miles away this spring and so did our friends that are also a family of 5. Even with gas costs, we saved 50% over the other family simply by pulling the camper.
We actually started off as tent campers because we were too broke for a hotel and that attitude has stuck with us.
