For us it's the getaway, and away from telephones, and TVs and to a fire on a cool mountain night, and morning. The smell of the campground during breakfast. Laying in a hammock by a little fire on one side, and a river on the other.
It is also a lot more affordable than getting a motel, or condo. There are a lot of places our campers have taken us that we could never have afforded to go other wise. For many years camping has been the only way we could go on vacation with out breaking the bank.
