As a kid, we tent camped and had a truck camper. I have fond memories of the truck camper (SixPac). When I grew up and moved out, I did some tent camping, but always hated the loading and unloading of the car with all the gear, and finding a place to store that gear. When I got my dakota pickup, I camped in it and found it much better than sleeping on the ground, but still had storing and loading issues. Plus I had two large dogs and space was getting cramped.
I started doing photography and found that day trips in the SUV didn't work well - I didn't want to get up and leave at 3 a.m. to shoot at dawn, and by the time I spent all day outside in the heat/cold, I was too worn out to stay until dusk. Started thinking that a TC would be nice so I could drive up the night before, get out at dawn and take photos for a few hours, then curl up in the TC and have lunch, take a nap, read, etc., then go back out at dusk for more photography, then head home.
But a TC wasn't viable as I didn't want a 2500/3500 pickup as a daily driver. Looked at class Bs, but they were financially too much. Ended up getting a cheap older TT as a "test" - less than $2000 to see if I'd actually be comfortable out there alone. Found I enjoyed the solo trips a lot, but the towing wasn't conducive to the 20-hour day trips and stopping along the way. So after a few years, I traded it in for the clipper. Now I'm happy and it works well for what I like to do (although I do 3-4 night camping trips more than 1-day trips).
Love having a permanent home for my camping gear - no dragging it in and out of storage. Love having solid walls - My Mom told me that they had gone tent camping with my oldest sibling and there was a guy attacking tenters with a knife at the campground; didn't attack my family, but it made me see the similarity between a tent wall and a shower curtain in relation to a knife. And with the clipper, I still get the cabover bed like a TC, but a bit more room below than our old SixPac had.
